SOV 2011 - Where Should We Go?

Oh, yea!!  After no sister trip last year, we are in the very beginning stage of planning where to go next year. 
We'll, we've had 1 suggestion - New Orleans.

So, my sisters and I usually use Yahoo Instant Messenger to chat. As I mentioned a few posts back, we've been having problems using that. It seems that at least one of us either can't log on or can't see everyone else that is logged in. Frustrating!

So, one of my Etsy teams is trying out Ning...and I thought to myself "I wonder if this will work for my sisters?"

What do you think?

Do you find it to be easy for the techno-challenged to use?

Can you make it private so only certain people can see it?

So, in a previous post, I'm sure I mentioned that my 2 sisters who lived in Michigan have now moved to Texas. It's at this time of the year I really miss them. We would always do a couple of craft shows together - that's so much more fun than either going alone or dragging my 5 year old son with me!

One of those sisters had a Christmas tradition of making handmade chocolates...turtles, chocolate covered cherries, peanut butter snowballs (my recipe for this one actually!), and many many others. Well, there's a local shop she get her top quality chocolate from. Guess what? She cannot find a supplier in her new hometown in Texas! So, who does she email for help? yup...me!

So, I ran out on my lunch hour, picked up 12 pounds of chocolate (8 for her & 4 for me). The next day I stopped by the post office to pick up one of those flat rate shipping boxes. Took it back to work to pack up. Stopped again after work to mail it. Was told the shipping would be over $17! Seems I picked up the wrong box. Remember, this is at the post office. I ask the guy, this isn't a flat rate box? He was great - he pointed out where they were...he peeled of the address label with tearing it and then put it on the next box...he opened up the wrong box and helped me slide everything (including shredded paper for packing) into the new box...and then he wrote "perishable" in it and put tape around it. He was great!

So sis...your chocolate in on the way!

Yahoo Instant Messenger

can be our best friend...or a most frustrating friend. As I've said, we're 5 sisters who are now spread out over 3 states. Yes, I'm the neglected one who is all along in the state we all grew up in...there are 2 sisters in Florida and the last 2 sisters now live in Texas (quite close to each other). So, one thing we've done since that last of us broke down and bought a home computer is to get online once in a while and all chat together. It does get confusing...

For example, we picked last night to chat. These days we have to be specific - and not only say the time but the time zone! Anyway...we are currently using Yahoo Messenger. But it seems lately that every time we try to chat, at least one of us has a problem! Last night, we were not able to invite sister #2...she kept signing in & out. We could see that. When we would try to invite her, she'd be unavailable. She finally had her son help her update Messenger. And that worked - we could invite her. However, her & I could not see each other's posts. So, we started over. Then, she would have these great long delays where she sees nothing...and then get everything at once. Weird...

So, please... we need some suggestions! Do any of you do private chatting? We need to try something new, but it need to be simple as um, some of us are more tech challenged than others.

Sisters...

I love mine!

and it's the time of year to make them some presents...of course, I can't tell you all here what I'm making this year as they could see it and it would spoil the surprise!
I will hint...I'm taking something we all had made a few years ago...and reformatting it.

This just made me laugh!

So, I'm out today doing a bit of shopping at Toys R Us. I got a $10 off coupons to use so why not? So, I've got a few things but need some more to reach that $100 purchase before the coupon kicks in. So, I pull out my cell phone and give my sister Jodie a call to see what my niece would like for Christmas. Well, the phone is answered so I say "hi Jodie". The voice on the other end tells me "Jodie is gone and this is her sister". So I say, "oh, this is her sister too". And the voice says "Hi Letty". And I laugh and say, "No, it's not Letty" and she finally knows the voice.

Savannah: 2007

Last year we went to Savannah for our sisters vacation. We had a great time over all. It didn't start off on the best note with our hotel room though...we ended having to change rooms because the mini fridge was not working! We needed a fridge. We had already unpacked when we discovered this, but since we only ended up moving to the very next room, it wasn't to bad.

They did have a couple of computers near the front desk that were internet enabled so we could look up places, check our email, and I could check my Etsy store! That was a bonus.

One thing that was amusing was watching my oldest sister try to open up a bottle of wine. Now, by no means was this the first bottle of wine she tried opening in her life! Ha! But, she broke her corkscrew...

No problem...she just went to the front desk and borrowed theirs.

AND BROKE IT!!!! Now, at this point we haven't even had any wine yet, but you couldn't tell that from the laughter! Ended up pushing that cork into the bottle...and then "straining" our wine in order to drink it.

We bought 2 new corkscrews the next day...gave one to the front desk to replace theirs...and used the other for about a day...before she broke that one!

More later on Savannah...the places we visited...the restaurants we ate at...the good...the bad.

wierd fact: our mom & dad had 6 kids (no, that's not the wierd part!)

~ of the 6, 1/2 were born in the month of September
~ of the 6, 1/2 were born on minor holidays (St. Patricks, Labor & Columbus days)

That's all...wierd, no?

Oh...and 2 of the 6 have birthdays 1 day apart...well, actually 2 years and 1 day apart!

One of the things we love to do when we get together on our family vacations is to play games. The oldest sister taught us Bunco a number of years ago...it's now a must-play for the family vacations. The kids love it! They love to roll those dice as fast as they can. They love to win little prizes. They hate losing! We play it nearly every night.

Helen GA: West Family Restaurant

Food...it plays a large part of a great vacation, doesn't it? We've been to some wonderful restaurants...and some lousy ones! I remember one in/near Helen, GA. It was/is a family-style restaurant called West Family Restaurant. The 5 of us sisters went. They had a buffet but I think we all decided to order off the menu. Granted, they were busy...but our waitress was simply lousy! It took forever to get our order taken. When she brought out our food, She no idea who ordered waht. She didn't even notice that one of us had NOTHING! No food at all! We had to call her back over and ask where the order was...and she didn't know.

Now, several of us sisters have worked in the restaurant business...waitressing, hostessing, fast food...we know what it's like. We know when someone is trying their best but are just too busy to do it all. We know when someone just doesn't care.

In the end, guess what tip another sister left her?

A TIP: FIND ANOTHER LINE OF WORK!!!

Helen, GA 1999

How did we decide to go to Helen? One of us sisters had heard about it from some co-workers. They loved it! A nice little Alpine village in northern GA. We checked it out on the internet and it looked good...things to do, places to eat, and places to shop...yup, that's our criteria!

I booked the hotel room through my Entertainment book...seemed like a good deal. Small room. With a roll-a-way. Remember, there are 5 of us...so a room with 2 beds is not enough! We barely fit the roll away in it. Four drawers in the dresser. One sink - but at least that was no in the same tiny room as the shower & toilet. We made it work. NOTE: always remember to bring air freshener on vacations!!!

Somewhere around day 3, we discovered that our peep hole in the door was turned around! Think about it...that means that someone outside the door could look into the room...and we wouldn't be teeny tiny! Yikes...yup, we covered that baby up!

The best place we ate at was the Edelweiss Restaurant...absolutely delicious! Both the food & the coffee!

We made special t-shirts for this, our 2nd SOV (sisters on vacation) trip. On the back they said "sisters on vacation". And people would read this and still ask "Are you all sisters?" Yup, here's your sign!

Overall, we had a good time. More later about Helen GA.

Umbrella Dance in Dillsburo, NC 2001

I haven't blogged yet about Dillburo, have I? It was one of our destinations a few years ago. I believe that the 3 of us Michigan gals passed through it on our drive home from Helen, GA. We thought it looked like a really nice little town. And it is!! We convinced the others that we should go here. We did a number of things this trip...but at nights, there was very little to do - all the shops closed! So, one night, we were taking a walk in the drizzle...we stopped near the train station and did the Umbrella Dance...

What else did we do this trip? We went to Maggie Valley and did dinner and a show - "Sweet Carolina Nights". This was promoted as a buffet dinner...but was really more cafeteria style. You carried a plate and they asked what you wanted...you did not serve yourself. But it was still good food. The show was fine.... I remember that there was this one gal who gave all of us the impression that she was the star of all her high school musicals...but that doesn't mean that she was great! She just thought she was. However, the piano player was fantastic! We bought a cassette of his.

We wanted to do a mystery dinner ride on the Great Smokey Mountain train...but it wasn't happening the week end we were there.

We wanted to go white water rafting...but it was too cold & rainy.

We really enjoyed our Bed & Breakfast. We stayed at the Old Towne Inn where we had the Dogwood Suite. Lena, our hostess, made us some wonderful breakfasts and kept the coffee coming. Remember girls, "it's for my sister"!

Branson MO or San Antonio TX for 2009?

So, it's almost time for us sisters to start planning our next SOV trip. (That SOV stands for "sisters on vacation.) I know one sister has mentioned us all going to Texas to see her house...and then seeing San Antonio. I'm kind of wondering if we shouldn't go to Branson...and check it out before we all go there in 2010. We can check out accomodations in person! After the last couple of experiences, I'd love the chance to do this!

Sweet Fanny Adams - Gatlinburg, TN 1997

So, our first vacation as sisters only was in Gatlinburg, TN. We had already visited the area with the hubbies and kids. We knew there were a lot more things we wanted to do so we went back. This year we actually had a guy as an honorary member of the SOV Club...our new nephew! This was a great chance for us Michigan gals to see him...since he lived in Florida!

We stayed in a suite right on the main strip. We did lots of shopping. One of our favorite places this year was seeing the show Sweet Fanny Adams. Great show! We laughed so hard, our cheeks hurt! They even made our nephew part of the show. My favorite was "The Paper Dance".

If you ever get the chance to go, I give it 4 stars!

So, where did you go on vacation?

With the high price of gasoline and airfare, I know many people have adjusted their travel plans. Where were you planning on vacationing...and did you end up someplace else?

We had planned on our family vacation to be in northern Georgia for over the past year. And that is where we ended up.

We are planning our next family vacation to be in Branson, MO...if we can find a place large enough and affordable for our group.

VRBO.com & guestbook comments

WOW - I'm peeved right now. A few posts ago I blogged about how we were getting our deposit back. On my other blog, I told about our experience with this owner. (here's a link) http://thatissocute.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html#1600297642182880253

Well, I just tried to leave a comment on VRBO.com. Here's how it works.
1) Go to the page of your rental - here's ours: http://www.vrbo.com/124069
2) Scroll down to where it say "view comments from previous guests"
3) Click on "add a comment to this guestbook".
4) Follow instructions.

And then guess what?????????? They email your own comment to you...and you can either delete it or click on a button that will forward to the owner for their approval. So, since I'm leaving a negative comment, I'm sure the owner will not approve it. Now, if it isn't approved, the negative will still show up - people just can't read it. That's helpful..to the owner, not to potential renters! Wait, here's the best part: the owner can "terminate" the guestbook at any time...getting rid of comments and any negavie counts...and then "reset" the guestbook and start all over.

And since this owner has zero comments, I'm sure that my 1 negative will be gone in no time!

Static Straps

Well, this is one item that no one ever seems to have heard of! Except my family! We've used them for years. Oh, what are they? A Static Strap is a long rubber strip that we hang from out rear bumper. It touches the ground and discharges any build up of static electricity.


Do they work? Yup, they do!





And I'll tell you the real reason my family uses them. It started when we were kids. We lived in Michigan and would often take the pop-up camper to Florida during winter break. Well, mom got car sick on long car trips. Dad had heard of these as being a way to avoid car sickness. I think that maybe the build up of static electricity leads to car sickness in some? Anyway...he bought some shortly before one of these camping trips. But, being that it was winter in Michigan, he told mom he was going to wait to put it on until we hit warmer weather.


Off we went...before we even got out of the state of Michigan, mom said to dad something along the lines of "if you didn't tell me you hadn't put those on, I would think you did. I don't feel sick." Which is when dad told her that he actually had put those on! She couldn't see them because of the camper. He just wanted to see how she reacted with no preconceived ideas. Ever since, they've always had them on the car.


I have one sister and a couple of nieces who tend to get car sick. So, I keep these on my car for those times we go somewhere. On the plus side, I don't get those nasty pokes from static electricity!

So...have you heard of http://tripadvisor.com yet? One of my sisters told me about it. It's a great website to do your research on before you take a trip. It's easy & free to register. Once to do so, can you select a city or cities that you are interested in and receive info about those. It's mostly lodging/airfare kind of info.

What I've done is start looking around for the next trip my sisters & I have planned. Last year, we were planning our sister trip to Savannah..wow - there is a ton of information about popular destinations. Oh, and it cover the globe, not just the U.S.A.

One of the best features in my opinion is the forums. These are categorized by location. For our just-completed vacation in northern GA, I went to the Blue Ridge forums and asked for help regarding the problem with the rental owner deciding to keep our deposit. I got some great answers! I really loved the post where someone gave me GA law...we actually included that in our letter to the owner...and we did get our deposit back!

Another great thing is that you can go and see reviews that "real" people have left. I still need to go post some reviews from our Savannah trip...for example, we were very dissatisfied with the Whistle Stop Cafe...and very happy with other restaurants. I love reading those...but remember to take all reviews with a grain of salt. I read a lot of reviews for "Lady and Sons" that were negative..but within those reviews were some great ideas. It helps to keep your expectations in check as well. I believe reading reviews does that.

2008: Carter's Lake, GA - Deposit being refunded!

Yea!! I haven't even blogged at all about this year's deposit disaster here! I did a little on my other blog (http://thatissocute.blogspot.com/). So, let me backtrack and give you a little history. This is the year that us 5 sisters and assorted husbands & kids all get together for 5-7 days. We had found a place through http://vrbo.com/ (vacation rentals by owner). It was quite expensive...but earlier in the year it looked like we were going to have a group of 18 or 19. Well...then several people had things come up where they were not able to join us. Another one was not able to get off of work. We were going to end up with 14 people. All of a sudden, we weren't really in need of a 6 BR 6Bath place. So, we looked around on VRBO and found a 5 bedroom in the same general area. Available. Cheaper. My main concern was that there were no comments on the site from customers. Emailed the owner who said she was willing to provide them. But, we were busy, running out of time and didn't follow through. Booked it and paid the deposit.


The place was quite nice. Just a few issues that were worth contacting the owner about (the satellite TV didn't work in 2 of the bedrooms...and the air conditioning could not keep the house cool during the day). The other issues were not worth calling about (food left in the house from previous tenants, a full trash can on the desk, empty beer bottles outside on the mountainside, a chip in a bathtub faucet, a bear foot on a wooden toilet paper holder comes off).

We packed up on our last day...checked the list of what we needed to do (turn the thermostats back, make sure there is no food, only 2 bags of trash left, all linens left in laundry room,etc). Did it all! Went home happy.

Deposit was supposed to be returned within 7 days. On day 9, my sister sent an email inquiring as to the status of the deposit...and was told it was being kept! We supposedly were disrespectful of her house and nature...Er, not true at all! Anyway, to make a long story short...we sent a letter back, certified mail, stating that she was not entitled to our deposit. The things she stated were that way when we arrived. She took the word of her cleaning lady (yes, the same one who did not previously report the damaged toilet paper holder or the chip in the faucet, who did not pick up the beer cans left by the previous tenants, who did not take care of the food that was left, and did not empty the trash can on the deck) and claimed we did all this!

She is sending back our deposit. But now, she claims that we inquired about about the return of our deposit the day after we left! Really??? We left on June 21. June 28 was 7 days. We inquired on July 2...

So...if anyone is thinking of renting in the Blue Ridge area of northern GA, let me know...and I'll let you know the name of the person we rented from.
